Today's meditation revolves around energy efficiency. Yesterday, after a very long day in the office it hit me. I felt like I had not slept in days. The truth is, the exhaustion was a result of too many late nights the previous weekend- enjoying Manhattan for all it's worth. I arrived home, undressed, closed the door to my room and hit the switch on one of the lamps next to my bed. Being the type that cares about the environment (and my electric bill) I bought energy efficient light bulbs that take a few minutes to reach their brightest as it takes a few minutes for the filament in the bulb to heat and produce the maximum 60 watts. As I was laying in bed, watching the light grow stronger, the concept of energy efficiency (focus) popped into my mind.
This isn't about energy efficiency in the sense of light bulbs or saving the environment. That only provoked the creation of today's meditation. The energy efficiency of this meditation is the efficiency of energy we put into our thoughts and actions. To elaborate on my topic, I need you, the reader of this meditation, to create in your mind a rule. The rule is: Your Thoughts Materialize into Things.
The perfect example of this fact comes from the way most people achieve their goals. They aren't sure of how they will achieve their goal- they just set the goal. "I will run 7 miles today." After the first five minutes of that run, you want to quit. Your legs are heavy, your chest burns from forcing your breath in and out- your heart is ready to explode out of your chest. Then, you picture the goal- the finish line. You don't know how you will get there, how you will push yourself- you just know that you will do it... and you succeed. To paraphrase a rather famous movie- no one who has ever done anything noteworthy in this world knew how they were going to achieve what they did, they just knew they were going to do it. This, I am dead certain of and the same holds true here.
Another example is one of my favorites. By concentrating on not being late for work, we create a chain of events that later result in us being late to work. Even though it is what we have been trying to avoid all along, it is what we have made truth. On the other hand, if we focus on being on-time to work, we change our behaviors and we create a chain of events that make us on-time to work. It is a simple change in the focus of our thoughts, and since our thoughts become reality, we should focus that energy on what we do want and not on what we don't want. The more I concentrate on not being late to work, the more I will be late and the more I concentrate on being on-time, the more often I will actually be on-time.
I have really taken this concept to heart and I have used it to change my life drastically. Take this from someone who has not had a drink or drug in 5 years and who has successfully quit smoking. I plan to use it more now, in this very moment and here is how:
Over the last few weeks I have been talking with friends and loved ones about how I want to change some things in my life- especially those related to my sex/romantic life. I have decided that although I am not ready for a relationship, I have come to the point where I want to want (Yes- that's right, I want to want) to be in a relationship. I also realize that as long as I allow myself to engage in casual sex, that I will not be able to make that emotional connection with anyone because I will be keeping them at a distance or using them for some sexual gratification rather than taking time to get to know them and appreciate them for who they are. So, instead of focusing on my sex life, I have decided to focus my energy on opening my heart and on developing stronger relationships with my friends and family. I want my energy to be spent on what I really want- which is a happy life filled with fantastic people who will be there for me day or night and who I can be there for as well. I also want the chance to meet someone who I can spend my life with- sharing with and brining joy to. For these things to happen, I need to focus my energy away from distraction and focus on things that bring me long term fulfillment.
I also want to mention that this philosophy works for you physically too. One can not look in the mirror and say, "I don't like ____," or, "I'm too ____," and expect it to be productive. You must actively place yourself into a process of change, "I am so happy and grateful that I am in the process of developing a more healthy and happy body." Set a goal. Make it happen. Do not concentrate on what you don't want or don't like. Concentrate on what you want. Concentrate on the changes you will need to make to get what you want. It is not energy efficient to complain about yourself (or anything really). It is not energy efficient to sit around and be depressed about your current circumstance. Empower your words and give energy efficiency to your life. Figure out what you really want, engage yourself in the activities that create bliss. Chase your dreams and make them reality. Just remember, it boils down to your perspective and how you exude/exhaust your energy. Are you focusing it on what will bring you more joy and more satisfaction or are you focusing on what will bring you down and keep you cemented where you are.
I hope this meditation makes sense to you in your life and that you empower yourself, energize your dreams and chase your bliss. Anything is possible.
